Who is a Good Candidate For LASIK?

LASIK isn’t the best vision correction procedure for everyone. Certain health conditions and life situations could prevent you from being a candidate for the procedure.

Also, your refractive error must be within the range of what can be treated with LASIK. To be a good candidate for LASIK, you must:

  • Be over 18
  • Have a stable prescription for at least one year
  • Have healthy corneas and eyes
  • Have a thick enough cornea for the flap creation
  • Be in good general health
  • Not be pregnant or breastfeeding

The best way to know if you are a good candidate for LASIK is to visit your eye doctor at North Valley Eye Center for a LASIK evaluation.

LASIK Alternatives at North Valley Eye Care

LASIK is an exceptional way to gain sharper vision without glasses or contact lenses, but it’s not the only way. If you’re a good candidate for LASIK, North Valley Eye Center offers a number of effective alternatives.

PRK

Patients who can’t undergo LASIK for various reasons may still be able to gain greater visual freedom with another refractive laser surgery called photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). During PRK, the PRK surgeon removes the top layer of the center of the cornea.

The PRK surgeon then uses a laser to remove a small amount of tissue in the exposed area of the cornea to reshape it. Afterward, the PRK surgeon places a type of soft contact lens over the area to serve as a protective bandage while the epithelium regenerates.

Once healed, the PRK surgeon will remove the contact lens.

EVO ICL

Patients who aren’t candidates for LASIK may still achieve greater visual freedom with the EVO Implantable Collamer® Lens (EVO ICL), a biocompatible, reversible vision correction option. Unlike LASIK, EVO ICL does not involve reshaping the cornea.

During the procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision to insert the EVO ICL between the natural lens and the iris, where it works with the eye to correct vision. The lens remains in place indefinitely but can be removed if needed.

Once the procedure is complete, patients typically experience rapid visual improvement with minimal downtime.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

This procedure involves exchanging the eye’s natural lens for an artificial implant, known as an intraocular lens (IOL). The process is similar to cataract surgery, except that the eye lenses aren’t yet clouded from cataracts.

RLE could be an alternative for some patients, including those with dry eyes or thin corneas.

Why LASIK is Worth the Investment?

LASIK is a life-changing procedure, but many people are concerned about the initial investment. Rather than focus on the cost of the procedure, consider the return on investment.

First, the change in your vision is quick, which means your quality of life will improve quickly as well. After a short adjustment period, you’ll be able to see better and more clearly than you ever have.

You’ll also be able to significantly improve your visual freedom. Glasses and contact lenses are also expensive and unlike LASIK, they aren’t a one-time cost.

The savings you’ll gain over a lifetime from reducing your visual aid purchases. This can partially offset the cost of a LASIK procedure.

There are many other intangible benefits, such as enjoying better vision, which can increase your self-confidence and improve your outlook on life. That can translate into better career and social life choices that could boost your overall quality of life.

LASIK also has a very high satisfaction rating. With over ninety-six percent of LASIK patients happy with their results, it’s clear that LASIK can be an excellent investment.
